Makalu Barun National Park is one of the most spectacular national parks in Nepal for its wildlife, jungle and the mountains. And Sagarmatha National Park is world heritage site national park where world highest peak Mount Everest (8848m) is located. Trekking Experts presents Makalu Sherpani Col Pass Trek which allows you to trek in both Makalu Barun National and Sagarmatha National Park (Everest region) in a single trek.
Makalu Sherpani Col Pass Trek also known as Makalu 3 Col trek brings you to the base camp of world fifth highest mountain and passes several throughout the trip. Makalu Sherpani Col Pass Trek with Trekking Experts brings you deep into the high Himalaya while the giant of Makalu, The Great Black looms above you and Everest, Lhotse and Baruntse are all right in front of you. The verdant Arun and Barun river valleys lead to Makalu base camp. The trail starts from Tumlingtar and while ascending or descending there are no flat walking sections, which make for quite arduous trekking. However, the natural surroundings are so beautiful that you will forget all the hardship and let the scenic view soak in. Makalu Sherpani Col Trek is one of longest trek in Nepal and one of the most strenuous treks which require extensive preparation and physical fitness on the part of trekkers. Glacier walking, use of ice axes, and other gears will be necessary to complete this trek. The trek presents overwhelming challenges of crossing the Sherpani Col (6120m), West Col (6143m) and Amphu Labtsa Pass (5848m), the three highest passes in the Himalayas. These three passes offers you uninterrupted views of Mt. Ama Dablam (6814m), Chonku Peak (6830m), Cho Polu (6734m), Island Peak (6189m), Kang Tega West and Kang Tega East among others. After making past Amphu Labtsa Pass, the trekking trail climbs Chukung in Everest region which straddles the Imja Tse Glacier. It normally takes few days to reach down to Lukla via the Sherpa villages of Pangboche, Phortse and Namche Bazaar. During this part of the trek you will be greeted by the majestic views of Everest, Ama Dablam and Lhotse and Phortse.

Upon your arrival at the Tribhuvan airport Trekking Experts representative welcomes you and assists to transfer in your hotel in Kathmandu. Upon arrival at hotel, our tour manager will brief you about trekking information and other necessary information. And then you’ll free time to explore Kathmandu. Dinner will be booked at the hotel.
After breakfast at hotel, you will be transferred to airport before 1.5 hours of your flight time. And then will fly to Tumlingtar which takes about 45 minutes. The flight leads you overlooking range of snowcapped peaks of Langtang all the way to Mt. Everest, Makalu & Mt. Kanchenjunga. Then you’ll meet your trekking crew (Guide, Sherpa, Porters) at Tumlingtar airport and will pack up your baggage then drive to Num (1505m) which takes about 5 hours drive in a bumpy road takes to by local vehicle. The first day drive trail leads you the cool and serene forest of rhododendron, oaks and hemlocks as we climb to the top of the ridge, from the top it is almost downhill for two hours to the overnight camp at Num, which is a small village with about fifteen houses and a primary school on the large flat ground, from where we have good view of our route for the next couple of days. Then will check-in local lodge there.
After breakfast at camp, you’ll descend incredibly steep and terraced slopes towards the Arun River, nearly 800 meters below. The lower slopes of this narrow valley are densely forested and the paths are quite slippery, after reaching the bottom, cross the suspension bridge across the torrential Arun River, and climb back out of the rain forest, reaching our lunch place at Runruma. Further walk steep climb takes you up to Seduwa a village with a small health post and a primary school. On the way Makalu National Park starts and we register our permits.
After breakfast at lodge, today you have easy and pleasant short walk to Tashi Gaon with the elevation of 2065m from sea level which takes you to rural farm villages, on the gradual trail through the farm fields and terraces, as you come near to Tashi Gaon, it's an uphill climb for an hour through the millet and rice fields. And it takes about 4/5 hrs to reach TashiGaoin, check-in in local lodge and free time to explore the village around.
After breakfast at lodge, you’ll we start your walking to reach our today’s destination point. The trail leads you towards the Khongma La, it is the last stop before crossing the Shipton La and dropping down into the upper sections of the remote Barun Valley. You’ll walk through the beautiful shade of the rhododendron and oaks forest, after leaving the dense forest coming to a summer pastures with traces of temporary made shepherd huts. From here onwards to Kahuma ridge is strenuous uphill climb, as the tree lines declines for the bushes of rhododendron and juniper. You'll stay here and can be seen scenic mountain ranges. Check-in at local basic lodge there and refresh with the scenic views of mountains.
After breakfast at lodge, you’ll gradually climb uphill towards the Shipton La (4220m) which takes few hours. After that you’ll reach KaloPokhari pass over the Keke Lake at 4152m.Then you’ll descent through the beautiful valley of Dobate (Dobato). During the trail you’ll also cross the pass (Shipton La), see the lake KaloPokhari and will see the vegetations, woods of pines, hemlock, birch and rhododendrons etc.
After breakfast at lodge, you’ll start with gentle walking towards rhododendron forest which leads you to the Barun valley, one of the least explored area in the eastern Himalayan region of Nepal. This unique landscapes of the MakaluBarun National Park with many species of flowering plants, bird species and species of mammals, including the endangers clouded leopard, red panda and musk deer. As you reach the lush alpine area of Barun Valley the walk is very pleasant with gradual uphill slopes, following the Barun River upstream on the valley gorge towards YangleKharka.
After having morning breakfast, you’ll trek following the Barun River upstream on the valley gorge towards Nehe-Kharka, one of the summer pastures for the local folks of Tashi and Navagaun. Onwards crossing the wooden bridge on the Barun River and walk on the boulders, where is a large prayer wall at Ramara, after 2-3 hours walk the vegetation gets sparse, although the rhododendron, barberries, cotoneaster and juniper bushes persist for some time.
After breakfast at lodge, you’ll trek towards Sherson (4650m) which is known as lower base camp of Makalu. There are number of stone enclosures at this high grazing ground with outstanding view of host of peaks, including the upper part of Makalu south face, and Mt. Baruntse 7,220m and at Sherson. From Shersonyou’ll continue your walking to Makalu Base camp, which takes about ¾ hrs. You’ll reach Barun glacier, near the glacier we see a glacial pond which is known as BarunPokhari. After a climb on the moraine ridge, for more spectacular views of Mt.Makalu, and of the usual hidden east sides of Lhotse and Everest, which looms above the Barun glacier to the North West.
Today, you have full day for rest at the camp or for acclimatization. You can also visit around some interesting hike and view points to explore, the most scenic walk would be taking a hike on the right side of the camp above for the closer view of Mount Makalu, Barun Pokhari and the view of the rare face of Everest the Kanshung face with Lhotse. A one hour steep up brings you to the large meadow you can walk farther up to have a greater view of the mentioned peaks and more other peaks of this area and beyond. After exploring the area stroll back to the camp.
After breakfast at camp, you’ll head to Swiss Base Camp today through the glacial and boulder-strewn landscape. You’ll head westwards to camp just below Makalu west pillar climbing valley on the west side of the Barun glacier. Following this valley onto the glacier you’ll make your way over the boulder-strewn caves and ice to a camp known as Puja Camp below the towering mount Makalu's West Pillar. The strenuous trek on the glacier will reward you with unique views of Lhotse and the rare Kangshung face of Everest.
Today is a contingency day, in case the weather doesn’t permit you. The day will also help you to prepare for the challenging passes that are to come in next few days.
After breakfast at camp, today you’ll pass through the loose glacial rocks. The traverse can be tricky as you have to make a steep descent and again steep ascent to reach the Base Camp. Camping spot will be right at the Sherpani glacier with overhanging ice walls and spectacular views of Makalu.
After breakfast at camp, you’ll continue today’s trek through the glacier covered with loosely piled rocks and ice. You’ll start your ascent towards Sherpani Col Pass (6120m) which is right in front of you. Sherpani Col will be the first pass that you’ll top in this trip. It is located at the top of the rock wall at the head of the glacier, which is a circular rock wall culminating in a peak. The rocky terrain to the Sherpani Col is inclined about 45 to 50 degrees. After passing the narrow pass that lies at the ridge dropping steeply on both sides, you’ll start a steep descent towards Baruntse Base Camp lying across an extended ice field.
After breakfast at camp, today you will cross the second pass West Col (6143m). You’ll follow the fixed ropes set by our Sherpas on the rocky terrain covered with ice, you traverse through the ice field and make your ascent towards West Col. You’ll be rewarded with majestic views of Makalu, Baruntse and Amadablam to compensate your strenuous trek. From, the West Col Pass at 6143m, you can see the sweeping view of dominating Ama Dablam and all the peaks of the Khumbu including some peak from Tibet too. You’ll also see Sherpani Col to the east. After the climb, you’ll again make a descent with the help of fixed rope through the Hongu Glacier to reach today’s camp at Panch Pokhari. Panch Pokhari means ‘Five Ponds’.
After breakfast at camp, today you’ll have more relaxed walk compared to the previous two days. You’ll have a beautiful glacial walk enjoying the majestic views of Makalu, Baruntse and some glacial lakes. You’ll reach camp after about 5 hours’ walk.
Today you’ve fully free to rest as a preparation to climb the last pass. You can explore the surrounding area and spend rest of the day in your tent to recuperate from previous days’ walk.
After early morning breakfast at camp, you’ll cross Amphu Laptsa Pass (5848m) today and trek to Chhukung. Your journey will lead you to the top of Amphu Laptsa Pass and overlooking stunning views of the impressive south face of Lhotse and Lhotse Shar and the summit of Island or Imja Tse Peaks almost parallel to you. As soon the kitchen staffs and porters arrive at the pass, they will also cross through relatively less steep ground below the pass (about 150m below). Similarly, loads have to be carefully lowered, after checking every member in the group slowly and carefully descend with the help of ropes and ice axe if required, then reaching the safe side from the pass by early afternoon everybody should be off the snow. Once in the safe ground away from the snow and ice area, an hour or more walk will take you to the ablation valley by the side of the Imja Glacier. And you’ll continue your trek to Chhukung. From Chhukung, there are many good lodges, but you’ll still stay in tented camp as all the kitchen crew will be with you.
After breakfast at camp in Chhukung, you’ll descend to Tengboche today. From today you’ll journey will be more pleasant walk descending down in lower altitude gradually. After two hours of easy walk brings you at Dingboche village. Dingboche village is a beautiful patchwork of field enclosed by stone walls, protecting the crops of barley, buckwheat and potatoes from the cold winds and grazing animals. From Dingboche , you’ll have gentle walk leads towards the Imja Tse River with excellent views of Ama Dablam, Kangtenga and Tawoche peaks in front of you which leads you Pangboche village. The gradual walk downhill brings you to Tengboche . You can visit Tengboche Monastery and enjoy the magnificent place surround by the impressive view of the snowcapped mountains.
After breakfast at camp, you can visit monastery and then descend to Phungi Tenka, here you’ll cross the long suspension bridge over the Imja Tse River. About half and hours walk from the bridge you’ll reach at view station where you can see view of Ama Dablam and Thamserku. And you’ll continue trek till Namche Bazzar. If you are interested you can take upper route and visit Khumjung and Khunde village and descend to Namche. Namche Bazzar is the business center of people of Khumbu where you’ll find good restaurants, shops, lodges, cyber cafés etc.
After breakfast at camp, you’ll downhill all the way till the confluence of Bhotekoshi and Imjatse which makes the Dudh Koshi. From here you’ll cross the long suspension bridge with a short climb into the pine woods and trail follows the river downstream passing through many farm fields and villages then coming at the entrance of Sagarmatha National Park in Monjo village. After Monjo another 2 hours of walk leads you to Phakding near the river Dudh Koshi. From there you’ll trek to Lukla by passing Chheplung and other several small villages along the way. In Lukla, you’ll stay in lodge and can celebrate your successful trip with your trekking crew.
After early morning breakfast, you’ll be supported to go to the airport. And you’ll take a scenic flight to Kathmandu which takes about 35 minutes. You’ll say good bye to your trekking crew today. Upon arrival in Kathmandu, you’ll receive by Trekking Experts’ representative and will drop you to hotel. Then you’ll fully free day at hotel for relax.
After enjoying a leisurely breakfast at the hotel, we’ll be met by our city tour guide for our day trip to a few of the Kathmandu valley’s most spectacular and important sights and some vibrant, colorful markets. With a meld of three ancient capitals and their associated palaces, temples and markets of Kathmandu has a lot to offer culturally and historically. However, we’re mindful not to overload you on your first day so will ensure the day has a good balance between sightseeing, exploring and relaxation time. The exact itinerary may change depending on the local conditions but we shall most likely visit: - Pashupatinath, one of the most important temples in South Asia to the Hindu God, Lord Shiva; - One of the three Durbar (Palace) Squares, a complex of palaces and temples which was formally the social, religious and administrative focal point of the ancient city. - Boudhnnanath Stupa, a wonderful Buddhist site centered on a huge Stupa topped with the all-seeing eyes. If possible, we’ll come here in the early evening to soak up the atmosphere of hundreds of Tibetan and Sherpa peoples walking their devotional khora. And after tour back to hotel. Evening farewell dinner at local authentic Nepalese restaurant. Overnight at Hotel
