Mount Makalu (8463 meters) is the fifth highest mountain in the world. Mount Makalu is situated in Makalu Barun National Park. Makalu Barun National Park is one of the most spectacular national parks in Nepal for its wildlife, jungle and the mountains. Trekking Experts designed Makalu Base Camp Trek to bring you to the base camp of world fifth highest mountain. Makalu Base Camp Trek is newly established lodge based trekking in Makalu region which takes you deep into the high Himalaya while the giant of Makalu, The Great Black looms above you and Everest, Lhotse and Baruntse are all right in front of you . The verdant Arun and Barun river valleys lead to Makalu base camp. The trail starts from Tumlingtar and while ascending or descending there are no flat walking sections, which make for quite arduous trekking. However, the natural surroundings are so beautiful that you will forget all the hardship and let the scenic view soak in.
As you walk up the river valleys, immense mountain vistas will unfold before you, including the massifs of Makalu, Everest and Lhotse. While on this trek you will encounter the indigenous groups of Rai, Limbu, Sherpa and Lhomi people you reside lower down. One of the most popular trekking peaks of Nepal, the Mera Peak (6654m), also lies in the Makalu Barun region. A large variety of common as well as endangered flora and fauna are protected in this region including rhododendrons, orchids, Snow Leopard, Red Panda, Musk Deer, Wild Boar, Wild Yak, Himalayan Thar, and more than 420 varieties of bird species. Some believe the area is also home to the elusive Himalayan giant, the Yeti. Trekking Experts offers Makalu Base Camp Trek in both tea-house trek and tented camp trek. Upon your arrival at the Tribhuvan airport Trekking Experts representative welcomes you and assists to transfer in your hotel in Kathmandu. Upon arrival at hotel, our tour manager will brief you about trekking information and other necessary information. And then you’ll free time to explore Kathmandu. Dinner will be booked at the hotel.
After breakfast at hotel, you will be transferred to airport before 1.5 hours of your flight time. And then will fly to Tumlingtar which takes about 45 minutes. The flight leads you overlooking range of snow-capped peaks of Langtang all the way to Mt. Everest, Makalu & Mt. Kanchenjunga. Then you’ll meet your trekking crew (Guide, Sherpa, Porters) at Tumlingtar airport and will pack up your baggage then drive to Num (1505m) which takes about 5 hours drive in a bumpy road takes to by local vehicle. The first day drive trail leads you the cool and serene forest of rhododendron, oaks and hemlocks as we climb to the top of the ridge, from the top it is almost downhill for two hours to the overnight camp at Num, which is a small village with about fifteen houses and a primary school on the large flat ground, from where we have good view of our route for the next couple of days. Then will check-in local lodge there.
After breakfast at lodge, you’ll descend incredibly steep and terraced slopes towards the Arun River, nearly 800 meters below. The lower slopes of this narrow valley are densely forested and the paths are quite slippery, after reaching the bottom, cross the suspension bridge across the torrential Arun River, and climb back out of the rain forest, reaching our lunch place at Runruma. Further walk steep climb takes you up to Seduwa a village with a small health post and a primary school. On the way Makalu National Park starts and we register our permits.
After breakfast at lodge, today you have easy and pleasant short walk to Tashi Gaon with the elevation of 2065m from sea level which takes you to rural farm villages, on the gradual trail through the farm fields and terraces, as you come near to Tashi Gaon, it's an uphill climb for an hour through the millet and rice fields. And it takes about 4/5 hrs to reach TashiGaoin, check-in in local lodge and free time to explore the village around.
After breakfast at lodge, you’ll we start your walking to reach our today’s destination point. The trail leads you towards the Khongma La, it is the last stop before crossing the Shipton La and dropping down into the upper sections of the remote Barun Valley. You’ll walk through the beautiful shade of the rhododendron and oaks forest, after leaving the dense forest coming to a summer pastures with traces of temporary made shepherd huts. From here onwards to Kahuma ridge is strenuous uphill climb, as the tree lines declines for the bushes of rhododendron and juniper. You'll stay here and can be seen scenic mountain ranges. Check-in at local basic lodge there and refresh with the scenic views of mountains.
After breakfast at lodge, you’ll gradually climb uphill towards the Shipton La (4220m) which takes few hours. After that you’ll reach KaloPokhari pass over the Keke Lake at 4152m.Then you’ll descent through the beautiful valley of Dobate (Dobato). During the trail you’ll also cross the pass (Shipton La), see the lake KaloPokhari and will see the vegetations, woods of pines, hemlock, birch and rhododendrons etc.
After breakfast at lodge, you’ll start with gentle walking towards rhododendron forest which leads you to the Barun valley, one of the least explored area in the eastern Himalayan region of Nepal. This unique landscapes of the MakaluBarun National Park with many species of flowering plants, bird species and species of mammals, including the endangers clouded leopard, red panda and musk deer. As you reach the lush alpine area of Barun Valley the walk is very pleasant with gradual uphill slopes, following the Barun River upstream on the valley gorge towards YangleKharka.
After having morning breakfast, you’ll trek following the Barun River upstream on the valley gorge towards Nehe-Kharka, one of the summer pastures for the local folks of Tashi and Navagaun. Onwards crossing the wooden bridge on the Barun River and walk on the boulders, where is a large prayer wall at Ramara, after 2-3 hours walk the vegetation gets sparse, although the rhododendron, barberries, cotoneaster and juniper bushes persist for some time.
After breakfast at lodge, you’ll trek towards Sherson (4650m) which is known as lower base camp of Makalu. There are number of stone enclosures at this high grazing ground with outstanding view of host of peaks, including the upper part of Makalu south face, and Mt. Baruntse 7,220m and at Sherson. From Sherson you’ll continue your walking to Makalu Base camp, which takes about ¾ hrs. You’ll reach Barun glacier, near the glacier we see a glacial pond which is known as BarunPokhari. After a climb on the moraine ridge, for more spectacular views of Mt.Makalu, and of the usual hidden east sides of Lhotse and Everest, which looms above the Barun glacier to the North West.
After morning breakfast, you’ll return to Yangle Kharka (3610m).
After earlier morning breakfast, you’ll trek back to Khong La with the same way which you had already done which takes about 7/8 hrs walk.
After breakfast you’ll trek to Seduwa following the same way which you have done.
Today, you have a short walk down to the downhill track through the farm fields to Num. Enjoy the walk during the re-track to Num village. After lunch drive to Tumlingtar.
Today, you’ll say good bye to our trekking crew. After breakfast, depending on your flight time, you’ll be supported to go to airport and then fly to Kathmandu. Upon arrival in Kathmandu, Trekking Experts representative will receive you at airport and drop to hotel. Then you’ve free time relax at hotel.
After enjoying a leisurely breakfast at the hotel, we’ll be met by our city tour guide for our day trip to a few of the Kathmandu valley’s most spectacular and important sights and some vibrant, colorful markets. With a meld of three ancient capitals and their associated palaces, temples and markets of Kathmandu has a lot to offer culturally and historically. However, we’re mindful not to overload you on your first day so will ensure the day has a good balance between sightseeing, exploring and relaxation time. The exact itinerary may change depending on the local conditions but we shall most likely visit: - Pashupatinath, one of the most important temples in South Asia to the Hindu God, Lord Shiva; - One of the three Durbar (Palace) Squares, a complex of palaces and temples which was formally the social, religious and administrative focal point of the ancient city. - Boudhnnanath Stupa, a wonderful Buddhist site centered on a huge Stupa topped with the all-seeing eyes. If possible, we’ll come here in the early evening to soak up the atmosphere of hundreds of Tibetan and Sherpa peoples walking their devotional khora. And after tour back to hotel. Evening farewell dinner at local authentic Nepalese restaurant. Overnight at Hotel
