Revised Royalty Fees for Peak Climbing in Nepal

This is to update you about the amendment of mountaineering regulations approved by Nepal Government recently. After a decade, Nepal Government has amended the mountaineering regulations.  The cabinet meeting held on January 8, 2025 has approved new mountaineering act 2081.  There are some fundamental changes made in the mountaineering regulations which included ban of solo climbing, increment in insurance premium for Nepalese workers, increment in daily wages of mountain workers and increment in peak royalty fees.  The new regulation is already come into effect from February 5, 2025. However revised royalty fees will be effective from September 01, 2025 only.

 

Key changes in new mountaineering regulations:

#No Solo Climbing: No mountaineers are allowed to climbing any peaks without Nepali climbing guide. There should be at least one climbing guide in each group for below 8000-meter peak. Mountaineers should take at least one climbing guide for every two members for any peak above 8000-meter peaks.

#Increment in crew members’ insurance: As per new regulations, now any climbing guide who goes above base camp is mandatory to have travel insurance worth 2 million rupees of accidental insurance and 1.5 million rupees worth accidental insurance for base camp staff. On top of it, search and rescue insurance worth USD 10,000 and medical insurance worth 0.8 million rupees also required for each person.

#Increment in staff wages, allowances: As per new regulations, the wages and allowances for high altitude workers and base camp workers have hiked by 40-65%.

#Increment in climbing royalty fees: As per new regulations, climbing royalty fees hiked by 36%.

* Permit fees for 27-peaks managed by Nepal Mountaineering Associaiton will be same as before. However there are some changes in insurance policy rules for Nepali workers.
