Lhasa Tour

Lhasa the capital city of Tibet is located at 3560 meter altitude and is one of the highest cities in the world. The city contains many culturally significant Tibetan Buddhist sites such as the Potala Palace, Jokhang temple and Norbulingka palace, Drepung monastery, sera monastery and typical Tibetan market Barkhor.

The Potala Palace was the chief residence of the Dalai Lama till the 14th Dalai Lama fled to India during the 1959 Tibetan uprising. It is now a museum and UNESCO World Heritage Site. The palace is named after Mount Potalaka, the mythical abode of Chenresig or Avalokitesvara. Potala Palace building measures 400 meters east-west and 350 meters north-south, with sloping stone walls averaging 3m thick, and 5m thick at the base, and with copper poured into the foundations to help proof it against earthquakes and has over 1,000 rooms, 10,000 shrines and about 200,000 statues – soar 117 meters on top of Marpo Ri. Jokhang temple is the most sacred and important temple in Tibet which in some regards pan-sectarian, but is controlled by the Gelug school. The temple’s architectural style is a mixture of Indian vihara design, Chinese Tang Dynasty design, and Nepalese design.

Drepung Monastery is the largest of all Tibetan monasteries and largest monastery in the world and located on the Gambo Utse mountain, five kilometers from the western suburb of Lhasa. There are about 7700 monks in this monastery. Sera Monastery is one of the ‘great three’ Gelukpa university monasteries of Tibet, located north of Lhasa.
